CBSE vs ICSE, choosing the right board for your daughter

Both boards produce strong outcomes. Here's what actually differs in day-to-day school life, and how to think about the choice for a girl in Mayur Vihar.

CBSE vs ICSE, choosing the right board for your daughter

Most parents in East Delhi face this question only once, when picking a school for the first time. The honest answer is that both CBSE and ICSE produce strong students, but the day-to-day experience differs in ways that matter.

CBSE, at a glance

  • Run by the Central Board of Secondary Education (Ministry of Education, Government of India)
  • Around 28,000 affiliated schools, including Mother Mary's
  • NCERT textbooks; lighter content load, more focus on practice
  • Strong alignment with national entrance exams (NEET, JEE)
  • Large alumni network, most government schools follow CBSE

ICSE, at a glance

  • Run by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (a private board)
  • Around 2,500 affiliated schools, more selective, English-medium
  • Heavier content load, more emphasis on English, second-language depth
  • Strong reputation for English communication, literature, and humanities
  • Smaller, more curated alumni network

Where the boards genuinely differ

For a girl entering school in 2026, the practical differences come down to four areas:

  • English: ICSE has more language depth, two papers in Class X. CBSE is one paper but covers literature thoroughly.
  • Science: CBSE's science syllabus is closely tied to NEET / JEE preparation. ICSE's science is broader but less directly aligned to entrance tests.
  • Mathematics: similar in scope, but CBSE's problems lean toward what's tested in competitive exams.
  • Workload: ICSE is generally heavier, especially in Class IX–X.

What about colleges?

Indian universities accept both. For Delhi University and most central universities, the cut-offs use percentage scores from either board with no preference. For NEET and JEE, the syllabus is officially CBSE-aligned, which gives CBSE students a small but real advantage in familiarity.

For abroad applications (US, UK, Canada), both boards are accepted equally; what matters is the strength of individual transcripts and SAT/ACT/IELTS scores.

How to think about the decision

In Mayur Vihar specifically, your real choice is between strong CBSE schools and a smaller number of ICSE schools. Look at the school first, its teachers, facilities, sports, arts and culture, and the board second. A great CBSE school with strong English teaching will beat a weaker ICSE school every time, and vice versa.

At Mother Mary's, we follow CBSE because it gives us flexibility to integrate skills-based learning under NEP 2020 while still preparing students well for engineering, medical, commerce and humanities entrance pathways. But we also teach English with the same depth most ICSE schools are known for, that's a school choice, not a board mandate.
